Romans 13:1–7 (NIV84)

1Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

2Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

3For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you.

4For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

5Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.

6This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.

7Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

It is Sunday morning April 19 as I write these Worship Thoughts.  It is not so much worship thoughts but a status of where we are in the process of STAY AT HOME as ordered by the Governor of Colorado (and many other states).

There are indications that on April 27 the Governor may begin to loosen the the STAY AT HOME order.  There are many factors that will go into that process.  Churches have been deemed essential for crisis and death situations.  The order has not allowed churches to gather.

As the orders become loosened, we may see a time in early May that we might be able to gather but not like we normally would have gathered.  How we gather will be based on the orders established by the Governor and the appropriate health related organizations.

Our challenge is significant.  90% of our community of faith is in the “high risk” category.  That will influence how and when we will come out of the suspended services.  We also need to recognize that how we gathered will be changed.  What will our gatherings look like as we are released to come out of suspension.

For the foreseeable future—

  • we will not be able to embrace each other with a hug or hand shake
  • we will be seated at least 6 feet apart
  • we will be wearing masks for a period of time
  • we will not have anyone handout bulletins.  The greeter will welcome (say good morning without physical contact) people inside the worship space and not at the top of the stairs
  • we will collect tithes offerings on Sunday mornings with a plate / offering box located at the Welcome Center table (no passing of offering plates).  You can place your tithes and offerings in the plate / offering box upon arrival or departure.

Why are we taking these steps.  As mentioned above, the overwhelming majority of our gathered community are currently high risk and will continue to be high risk.

Paul commended the house gathering of believers in Rome to:

Romans 13:6–7 (The Message)

6That’s also why you pay taxes—so that an orderly way of life can be maintained.

7Fulfill your obligations as a citizen. Pay your taxes, pay your bills, respect your leaders.

As we come through this COVID-19 and begin to reopen, help us to not sprint through the process, but continue to “fulfill your obligations as a citizen.”

LORD – We pray the prayer of David—

Psalm 16:1–11 (The Message)

1Keep me safe, O God, I’ve run for dear life to you.

2I say to God, “Be my Lord!” Without you, nothing makes sense.

3And these God-chosen lives all around— what splendid friends they make!

4Don’t just go shopping for a god. Gods are not for sale. I swear I’ll never treat god-names like brand-names.

5My choice is you, God, first and only. And now I find I’m your choice!

6You set me up with a house and yard. And then you made me your heir!

7The wise counsel God gives when I’m awake is confirmed by my sleeping heart.

8Day and night I’ll stick with God; I’ve got a good thing going and I’m not letting go.

9I’m happy from the inside out, and from the outside in, I’m firmly formed.

10You canceled my ticket to hell— that’s not my destination!

11Now you’ve got my feet on the life path, all radiant from the shining of your face. Ever since you took my hand, I’m on the right way.
